Case Study: Making a House a Home

In early 2019, we were briefed by Jojo Humes, owner of interior design studio Sojojo, to lay new flooring for one of her clients as part of an overall refurbishment of their large, modern family home in Ipswich.

A Tailored Service

This project was a little different because, rather than dealing with the homeowners, we worked alongside Sojojo to provide the required flooring as specified by Jojo herself. While most of our clients require some guidance from our team of experts, Jojo had been given full oversight of the project by the homeowners, designing the home according to the needs and personalities of the family.

For the high-traffic areas of the large entrance hallway, kitchen and dining room, Jojo selected RP41 Australian Walnut from Karndean’s Da Vinci range. This luxury vinyl flooring is hard-wearing, versatile and low-maintenance, making it the most suitable option for the home’s underfloor heating system. To complement the Karndean flooring, Jojo chose Kersaint Cobb’s Pampas Nordic Stripe Iceland, a luxury woollen carpet.

“I had not worked with Donnelly Watson before, but thoroughly enjoyed working as a team, and would seek them out to work with again, without a doubt.”

- Jojo Humes, Owner of Sojojo

Utilising Our Expertise

As the home was a new build, the hallway already had ceramic flooring. This meant that, prior to screeding over the whole floor, we needed to fill in the areas where the ceramics were missing in order to maintain the floor’s height. In this case, we used latex screed to preserve the underfloor heating that was underneath the pre-existing ceramic grey tiles. If we had chipped away to remove the tiles in order to lay the new flooring, it could have potentially damaged the underfloor heating.

The project also required precise laser measurement to ensure the Karndean parquet flooring was laid perfectly. One incorrect measurement at the start of the project could have affected the entire laying process. The skirting boards were also removed to ensure the flooring met end-to-end.
